Japan, Russia congratulate new PM

Japanese Prime Minister Mr. Junichiro Koizumi has sent a congratulation
telegram to the Mongolian Prime Minister Mr. M.Enkhbold. In this
congratulation telegram, Mr. Koizumi congratulated Mr. M.Enkhbold
for being appointed as Prime Minister of Mongolia and also congratulated
the country on the 800th anniversary of the foundation of the
Great Mongol State, which is taking place this year. He wished
good health to Mr. M.Enkhbold and a prosperous development for
Mongolia. Also, Russian Prime Minister Mr. Mikhail Fradkov congratulated
new Prime Minister M.Enkhbold
Arts Council of Mongolia grants

Ulaanbaatar, /MONTSAME/. The Arts Council of Mongolia (ACM) has
announced its annual project contest for the Year 2006 to grant
money allowance for the improvement of potentials of urban and
rural professional arts and cultural organizations. The Arts Council
will grant allowance to professional arts and cultural organizations
to invite foreign professional artists, arts managers, experts
and teachers, to improve children s art education, to attend arts
professional and management short-term training, meetings and
festivals, and to join international organizations. The money
allowance will also be given to organize zonal seminars and training
among rural arts and cultural organizations and to invite specialists
from the Ulaanbaatar City s arts and cultural organizations and
higher schools for the improvement of rural artists` qualification.
New Fountain on Sukhbaatar square

A new style of fountain, which operates in four seasons, will
be constructed in the southern part of the Sukhbaatar Square.
Four organizations from China, Hong Kong and Russia have offered
their proposals to carry out the above work. The fountain will
be put into within 2-3 months before this summer. Software with
60 music sounds will be installed in it. According to rhythm of
sounds, water of the fountain will spring with many shapes.

Mongolia Web: Delegates led by Mr. G.Tenger, Head of the Foreign
Relations Service of the Mongolian People`s Revolutionary party
(MPRP), has attended the Soc-Intern consultative meeting held
in Athens, Greece on January 30-31, 2006. The MPRP representatives
held meeting with Mr. Frank Shauf, Advisor for Foreign Relations
of the German Social Democratic Party, Mr. Wete Bartoldus, Head
responsible for Asia-Pacific issues of the Friedrich Ebert Fund,
and Mr. Klauspeter Hill, Head responsible for Asian issues of
the Konrad Adenauer Fund. They exchanged views on issues related
to the parties` structure, organization, internal democracy, election
management, and democratic socialist idea.

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia A working group of the Civil Will Party
/CWP/ has met a counterpart of the DemParty. The meeting was held
according to the CWP s statement on jointly forming a Shadow Government
with the DemParty. The Chairwoman of the CWP Ms. S.Oyun, the Vice
Chairman Mr. Ts.Gankhuyag, the Secretary-General M.Zorigt, and
members from the Executive Council of the DemParty Mr. E.Bat-Uul,
Z.Enkhbold and S.Lambaa attended the meeting to discuss about
how to arrange the Shadow Government. The attendants considered
that it will be right to urgently set up the Shadow Government
after the Executive Council of the DemParty discusses about this
issue
.
MPRP's demands from protest leader

Local media report that the MPRP (Mongolian People's Revolutionary
Party) demands MNT 30 million from S.Ganbaatar, Leader of the
“Resolute movement” based on damage caused during
the civil protest demonstration in the last weeks. During these
protests that were organised by the resolute movement in cooperation
with other civil will movements, people attacked to MPRP building
and broke windows and other party properties. The MPRP’s
claims the damage totals MNT 30 million.
Besides this, Sukhbaatar district Police Force have indicated they are considering
the arrest of S.Ganbaatar an the claims of organazing unauthorized
protests and promoting hooliganism. In this case, he might be
imprisoned for up to 5 years and have limited rights to participate
into political and popular activities
US-Mongolia Research Fellowship 2006

The American Center for Mongolian Studies (ACMS - www.mongoliacenter.org) in
conjunction with the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) and
the US Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA)
is pleased to announce the creation of the US-Mongolia Field Research Program
to support academic research projects in Mongolia by US and Mongolian students
in summer or fall 2006.
The program is expected to support approximately 3 students from
US universities and 6 students from Mongolian universities to
conduct field research in Mongolia between May and December 2006.
Applicants must be either US or Mongolian citizens or permanent
residents currently enrolled full-time in a university or college
in the United States or Mongolia. Undergraduate applicants must
have at least third year standing in their program, while graduate
applicants can be at a masters or pre-dissertation doctoral level.
Horse of New PM Enkhbold Wins Race

The traditional horse race of the Tsagaan Sar Lunar New Year was
held under bitter cold circumstances. Temperatures dropped below
the -30C line, but nevertheles the race took place. The young
riders, often younger than ten years, suffered from the icy cold
weather. In the end the winner was a horse owned by the newly
assigned Prime Minister Enkhbold.
Mongolia's Bituun Wrestling Criticized

On bituun (the eve of the Lunar New Year) Mongolia has its traditional
national wrestling competition. 43 years ago, in 1963 Tsagaan
Sar was named as Negdelchdiin Bayar (Festival of the Collective)
and 43 wrestlers participated.
But, the public has criticized this New Year’s wrestling
of B.Bat-Erdene, G.Usukhbayar and D.Sumyabazar. B.Bat-Erdene won
in this competition and runner up was D.Sumyabazar. B.Bat-Erdene
is a veteran and the most succesful wrestler in Mongolia, but
since 2004 also Mongolian parliament member for the MPRP. It was
expected that young powerful wrestlers G.Usukhbayar and D.Sumyabazar
would win the competition, but to everybody's surprise the old
Bat-Erdene won the games. according to reporters not in convincing
way.
Now the media speculate on the competition being a set-up and that the competition
was used for political purposes
